More About The Chainsmokers:
Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall make up the New York City-based duo The Chainsmokers. They create and produce their own songs, which often include guest singers.
The pair came to prominence with their viral hit “#Selfie” in 2014, and subsequently burst into the public with their smash song “Roses” and first EP Bouquet.
In a March 2016 YouTube video, the pair discussed intentions to release tracks with their voices. This was seen when “Closer,” a song written by Andrew Taggart and performed by American singer-songwriter Halsey, was released in July 2016. “Closer” became the most renowned song by both The Chainsmokers and Halsey.
The Chainsmokers had a breakthrough year in 2016, with platinum-certified original tracks “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” leading their second EP Collage. With three GRAMMY nominations and one GRAMMY for Best Dance Recording for “Don’t Let Me Down,” the pair had their most successful year ever.
Following their first GRAMMY triumph, the pair revealed their first album, Memories…Do Not Open, in a red carpet interview with Entertainment Weekly on February 12, 2017. The album was published on April 7, 2017, and was followed by a “Memories: Do Not Open” tour in the United States.
The Chainsmokers’ commercial success continued in 2017, with the release of “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” allowing The Chainsmokers tie The Beatles and the Bee Gees for the most singles in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 at the same time.
After a brief sabbatical from song releases, the pair returned in January 2018 with the release of “Sick Boy,” the first single off their second album of the same name. A Billboard story highlighted The Chainsmokers’ intention to develop an album by releasing a song nearly every month. The album produced the minor successes “This Feeling,” “Sick Boy,” “Side Effects,” and “Everybody Hates Me,” which charted at 50, 65, 66, and 100 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
The pair wasted no time in announcing their third album, World War Joy, as well as their second arena tour, which will take place in the fall of 2019. The album’s debut single, “Who Do You Love,” featuring Australian pop-rock duo 5 Seconds of Summer, was an immediate smash, going to number 54 on the Hot 100 and being certified Platinum by the RIAA. The album also yielded two other hits, the Platinum single “Call You Mine” featuring American singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha and the Gold single “Takeaway” featuring American DJ/producer Illenium and Nashville-based recording artist Lennon Stella, both of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 56 and 69, respectively. The album was published on December 6, 2019, and debuted at #65 on the Billboard 200 albums list and #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, selling 14,000 copies in its first week.
On February 24, 2020, the pair declared a social media break to work on the composition of their fourth, as-yet-untitled studio album. On January 6, 2022, the pair announced the imminent release of “High,” their first new song in over two years, following an almost two-year sabbatical. The song was released on January 28, 2022, and debuted at #57 on the Hot 100 in its first week, having a huge effect on pop radio and quickly debuting within the top 30.
In the United States alone, the pair has certified sales of over 50 million singles and approximately 5 million albums.
